Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Public Works Supervisor, the primary purpose of the Cheam Maintenance Worker is to conduct general grounds and building maintenance tasks for all Cheam public/common areas, community grounds, community buildings, water systems, wastewater systems, and Band Rental and Social Housing.

This is a SASET funded 52 Week position therefore applicants must be the following criteria:

1. Must be First Nations/Inuit (not Metis), status/non-status, reside on or off reserve, within SASET catchment area.
2. Post-secondary student who was a registered full-time student during previous academic year and intend to return to full-time studies in the following academic year.
3. Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of the program.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Complete general maintenance tasks for all public/common areas, community grounds and community buildings.
• Operate equipment and various small power/hand tools.
• Maintain Cheam Band lawns and yards.
• Mow, weed (weedwack), and treat all Band fields and grass, including cemetery.
• Prune/trim trees, hedges and shrubs as required.
• Clean external areas such as entranceways, sidewalks and parking lots using rakes, shovels and other equipment to remove dirt, leaves, snow and other refuse.
• Shoveling, applying mulch, chipping and waste removal.
• Perform repair and preventative maintenance for basic grounds/land-keeping equipment.
• Perform repair and maintenance to grounds as needed.
• Perform snow removal, salt and sand application, or other related tasks.
• Operate tractor where applicable.
• Complete refuse/garbage collection and recycling tasks.
• Respond to emergency calls of the community when and where required.
• Perform materials handling; this includes delivering materials from one site to another and loading and off-loading.
• Perform basic labour work such as digging, raking, etc.
• Assist with inventory tracking of tools, supplies and other materials.
• Perform set-up and clean-up requirements at various job sites.
• Load refuse, compost garbage and recycling, and distribute to transfer station or landfill.
• Report any deficiencies in equipment and repairs required to the Public Works Supervisor and/or Manager. Notify the supervisor of any deficiencies that will require the use of contractors for repairs required.
• Assist in completing Housing maintenance and repairs on reserve. Including drywall repair and installation; painting; minor plumbing (changing washers, seals, replacing toilets, etc.); flooring repair and/or replacement; cabinet and counter demo and installation; etc.
• Operate equipment safely and efficiently at all times.
• Comply with WSBC and WHMIS rules and regulations at all times.
• Use appropriate safety equipment at all times.
• Work in cooperation with other maintenance staff.
• Collect tree limbs, animal carcasses and other miscellaneous debris and dispose of them when and where required.
• Other duties or responsibilities as assigned by your Supervisor, Manager, and/or the Cheam Executive Director.

Required Qualifications / Education / Experience / Skills:

• Previous experience working in a construction environment would be considered an asset.
• High regard for safety and ability to comply with WorkSafeBC and WHMIS rules and regulations at all times.
• Strong work ethic and a positive attitude.
• Excellent attendance.
• Ability to follow instructions.
• Good physical strength, hand-eye coordination and endurance. Ability to lift, handle and move 50 lbs. Must be physically able to perform physically demanding work such as, but not limited to: lifting, pulling, digging, stooping, and climbing a ladder, etc.
• Ability to work well in a team environment as well with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to work flexible hours. Hours of work may vary from early mornings to evenings and weekends. Ability to work varied shifts including evenings and weekends when required.
• A valid BC Driver’s License, Class 5 is an asset.
• Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
